Chimes DC Participates in First-time Job Fair at the Special Olympics in Seattle

SourceAmerica, a national leader in creating employment opportunities and choices for people with disabilities, and the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games are teaming up to train athletes for career success, and Chimes DC, which employs persons with disabilities on 25 service contracts in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and in the District of Columbia, has been selected to participate in this landmark event.

For the first time at a USA Games, Special Olympics will offer a job fair for athletes in conjunction with the USA Games in Seattle. Athletes and other individuals with intellectual disabilities will embark on a trip through a series of stations to assess, polish and present their skills to commercial employers, and  that recognize the potential of Special Olympics athletes on the job.

Candidates and family members will receive coaching from employment experts from SourceAmerica and its network of nonprofits. They will learn tips on how to share their talents with potential employers, strengthen interview skills and gain other career advice. After the coaching session, candidates will meet representatives of companies that are seeking new talent. It’s a chance for both potential employees and employers to learn more about each other and share contact information. Our Chimes DC Director of Human Resources, Joni Dorsett, will be participating and recruiting on-site, along with companies such as Microsoft, Bank of America, Starbucks, Walmart and Amazon, and other SourceAmerica member nonprofit agencies, from across the country.

Beth Knox, president and CEO of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games, noted; “People with intellectual disabilities are often an untapped resource for employers, and we’re so excited to provide a platform for our athletes and employers to connect.” Chimes DC Executive Vice President, Jerry Cotter also noted; “Chimes DC is thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the in the job fair and to help communicate that the employer/employee network is out there, and that the network, like Chimes DC, is actively seeking to hire persons with disabilities”.
